Experienced Learner Mode

A supported pathway for highly experienced education support students

Experienced Learner Mode is available for the small number of education support students who already have substantial, current experience in the sector but are not quite suited to a pure RPL pathway.

It is designed to bridge the gap between RPL and the full standard course. RPL is an assessment-only process with no training. The standard course includes the full learning sequence, resources and support. The Experienced Learner Mode sits between these options by allowing suitable students to move quickly through areas they already know, while still accessing learning materials and trainer support where gaps exist.

This pathway is not a short course. It is a flexible mode of study based on the same course requirements as the standard course. While it is structured around a 16-week study plan, actual completion times vary depending on the student’s existing skills and knowledge, availability, placement progress and support needs.

ITAC encourage most students considering RPL to enrol in this mode. There is no cost difference between RPL, Experienced Learner Mode and the standard course.

Who this mode is for

Experienced Learner Mode may be suitable for students who:

  • have substantial experience working in education support or a closely related school-based role
  • already understand many of the practical skills, workplace expectations and support strategies used in schools
  • can progress quickly through familiar course areas
  • may still need training, guidance or revision in selected areas
  • are likely to complete successfully with a more flexible and targeted level of support

It is not suitable for students who are new to education support, have limited school-based experience, or require the full learning sequence to build their foundation knowledge and skills.

How the mode is structured

Students in Experienced Learner Mode complete the same course requirements as other students, including the required assessments and all workplace evidence requirements.

The difference is the way the course is approached. Students work quickly through areas they already understand and spend more time on areas where they need to refresh, practise or fill knowledge gaps. They still receive access to course materials, online resources, trainer support and assessment guidance.

This gives experienced students a practical middle option: more support than pure RPL, but more flexibility than progressing through the full standard course in the usual way.
