With all ITAC courses (including those conducted via distance learning), students are encouraged to contact their trainer on a regular basis, as well as to attend regular tutorials and other events. All students can pick up the phone or send an email seeking help and support at any stage of their course. Online or distance learning certainly does not mean that students are expected to go at it alone.
We also contact our students on a regular basis to keep in touch, to provide and offer support, and to ensure that each individual is undertaking a program of study that suits their needs and goals. Distance or online students can even attend classes subject to space and approval. You can view the current class calendar here.
Class-based options are very popular and ITAC have been offering and running these classes for more than a decade in WA. Our class-based courses run one day per week from Cockburn Central (which is only a 16-17-minute train ride from the Perth CBD on the Mandurah line).
Our classes are more like workshops or tutorials. They cover the main aspects of each topic – however, students are still required to complete learning from home (including watching or listening to webinars, reading and other activities). Our classes are very popular and are highly recommended if you can make it. See our website for more information, including our class calendar. For distance students or if you can’t make it to class, we record many lectures and make them available in the student portal.
Before graduating from any of these nationally recognised qualifications in WA (and anywhere in Australia for that matter), all students must log 100 hours of work placement in a registered WA school (such as those listed on the Department of Education’s ‘Schools Online’ platform for public schools or the Catholic Education Office’s website.
The 100 hours of work placement is a government requirement in Australia for both the CHC30221 Certificate III in School Based Education Support and the CHC40221 Certificate IV in School Based Education Support. However, this requirement is good news because many students find work at the school where they undertake their placement (provided you were properly trained by a reputable provider and could implement best practice teaching strategies). The placement can generally be completed in a local school and is always completed under the watchful guidance and mentorship of an experienced and qualified teacher who is registered with the Teacher Registration Board of WA.
An ITAC trainer will also visit you in the workplace to assess you as part of your qualification and to provide guidance, support, advice and tips for your continued professional development. The CHC30221 Certificate III in School Based Education Support is a popular qualification for learners in WA who intend to work as an education support worker in an Australian school. Learners who undertake the CHC30221 Certificate III in School Based Education Support are likely to find work in one of Western Australia’s 1121 schools (including 812 government schools or any one of the 309 non-government schools in WA).

The CHC40221 Certificate IV in School Based Education Support is a popular course for those seeking an education support position in a WA school as a teacher aide, teacher assistant or education assistant. This course has a focus on working and support students with special needs such as visual and hearing impairment, neurological disabilities, mental health issues and a range of other disabilities, disorders and difficulties that require specialist support.
Graduates of the CHC40221 Certificate IV in School Based Education Support may find work in one of WA’s 66 education support schools or centres. They tend to work in higher- paid positions that require specialist qualifications and skills. This includes working with students with disabilities, disorders, complex needs and comorbidities (multiple disabilities and health issues). However, they are not restricted to working with students with special needs but are qualified to do so should they wish (or be required to).
To become an education assistant in WA you must first complete an education assistant qualification (such as the CHC30221 Certificate III in School Based Education Support) and then start applying for work in local schools. You will also need a ‘Working with Children Clearance’ or WWCC in order to enter school grounds.
Many students being their career by working relief (casual) or short-term contracts and eventually progress to permanent positions. You can read more about how to become an education assistant in WA here.
The difference between the CHC30221 Certificate III in School Based Education Support and the CHC40221 Certificate IV in School Based Education Support is actually rather small. The Cert III covers all the basics, while the Cert IV covers these same things with the addition of strategies for supporting students with more complex needs (disabilities) and comorbidities (multiple disabilities and health issues).
Both courses cover all of the essential skills of working in schools as a support worker, such as:
The CHC30221 Certificate III in School Based Education Support takes approximately 26 weeks or 6 months to complete. The time it takes to complete this course varies greatly, however. The reason for this is that most of the course is self-paced meaning students work through each component of the course at a rate that suits them.
Take for example a student who has experience with children and has worked in a similar environment – let us say aged care just for an example. This person will fly through the first cluster – safety – as there is considerable overlap between aged care and education support in terms of safety (concepts such as hazards, duty of care, risk assessment, incident reports, reporting procedures etc.). So, while one student may take 100 hours to complete this cluster, the person in this example may taken 10-20 hours (maybe less, maybe more).
Similarly, people with experience with children tend to find this course very easy. This includes anyone who has raised children or has worked in childcare or other similar industries, For these people, a lot of the course is about professionalising what you already know, and much of the course will seem like a ‘no-brainer’. This assumes however, that your enrolment is with a provider who has experience, expertise and who provides ongoing support – many providers, particularly those who teach dozens of non-related qualifications, may lack expertise and focus.
The CHC40221 Certificate IV in School Based Education Support takes the same amount of time to complete as the CHC30221 Certificate III in School Based Education Support. In fact, in many respects it is easier because it has a more narrow focus (disabilities) as opposed to the Cert III which is broadly focused (for example, a single strategy can be applied to an endless number of situations, students, topics).
After you have completed your CHC30221 Certificate III in School Based Education Support you will be able to work in any school in Australia in practically any teacher aide position. You could work in a government school or a non-government school. You could work in a senior college, high school, primary school or kindergarten. You may even work in a special needs centre or school (often called education support centres in WA).
This is of course premised on the quality of your training and the skills and knowledge that you are exposed to and learn in your nationally recognised qualification. Ensure that you enrol with a provider that teaches a wide variety of teaching and learning strategies and skills such as best practice one-on-one support, worked examples, play based learning, formative assessment, feedback techniques and so forth – don’t be shy about asking your provider for information on what specifically you will learn as it is crucial to your future career and no two RTOs are the same in terms of the content of their courses.
