Think you could be a teacher aide? ITAC now offer our popular research-based teacher aide courses to anyone living in or around the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Completing a teacher aide course in the ACT is the first step towards a long, stable and rewarding career in the ever-expanding education sector. Teacher aides support students learning, development and behaviour. They assist the teacher with logistical and operational tasks such as preparing activities, developing resources, cleaning, storing equipment, record keeping and many other tasks depending on the needs of the class or program.
In all states and territories of Australia, there are two nationally recognised qualifications for teacher aides. You will need to complete one of these teacher aide courses should you wish to seek employment in a school in the ACT. ITAC also offer a third program which we call the Teacher Aide Combo. A brief description of each course is outlined below:
For students who intend on working in a mainstream classroom this may be the course for you. This teacher aide course will enable you to work in any school in the ACT (except some special needs schools which require the higher-level course for some positions due to the nature of working with students with complex needs). This is the introductory teacher aide course which covers all of the standard yet effective teaching skills and strategies that will enable you to undertake work as a teacher aide in the ACT. Topics covered include basic teaching strategies such as scaffolding and modelling, basic behaviour management techniques such as proximity, broad operational skills such as hazard identification, and the basics of working with and supporting students with disabilities, disorders and difficulties.
If you are really keen on a teacher aide career in the ACT, this is the teacher aide course for you! Completing this advanced and higher-level teacher aide course will mean you exceed the minimum requirements for work as a teacher aide in the ACT. You will be able to work in mainstream classrooms as well as special needs schools. Graduates of this course can competently and confidently work with students with special needs including those with multiple disabilities and disorders and comorbidities.
There is no need to complete the lower level Certificate III course before enrolling in the CHC40221 Certificate IV in School Based Education Support; the majority of students can go straight into this qualification, particularly adult learners who have experience with children (including their own). We recommend the CHC40221 Certificate IV in School Based Education Support over the CHC30221 Certificate III in School Based Education Support for most students as it provides the greatest level of employability.
Our flagship program, the teacher aide combo, is the most popular course we offer and is available to residents of the ACT area by distance learning. Why complete 1 course when you can complete 2 courses in about the same amount of time (and for not much more in terms of cost)? The combo is a great way to beef out your resume and to double your chances of finding work in your preferred school in the ACT area. In fact, we have thousands of former students working in schools across Australia.
Distance learning, often called online or external learning, is the preferred mode for many of ITAC’s students who seek to enrol in one of our teacher aide courses from the ACT. As the leader in teacher aide training in Australia, we provide the best service, resources and experience in terms of distance learning. We don’t just throw a pile of books your way – our students access a large array of videos, lectures and past webinars made by industry experts. They can attend one of our many live webinars, download and read free readings and e-books, complete online activities, and even submit most of their assessments via our online portal. With over 80% of our students graduating (3x the Australian average), we are confident that our online courses will get your career off to the start it deserves.
Our students study the latest methods, strategies, techniques, skills and approaches that you won’t find anywhere else. Only at ITAC will you learn the important concepts that teachers learn and use day to day such as effective questioning skills, formative assessment and enquiry-based learning. You will also study more advanced skills that will make you an invaluable member of the school community – the most sought-after teacher aide in your school. This includes Cognitive Load theory, coping strategies and motivational strategies to name just a few. This is another reason for why our courses are the most popular teacher aide courses in Australia.
