How long will the course take?
The CHC30125 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care takes about 6–12 months to complete. Completion time is not fixed and can vary depending on each student’s background, weekly study routine, confidence, support needs, placement arrangements and personal circumstances.
Students may complete closer to 6 months where they have:
- relevant early childhood, childcare, family day care, education support or related-role experience
- substantial experience with babies, toddlers or young children through parenting, volunteering or community involvement
- transferable workplace skills, such as communication, teamwork, WHS, following policies and procedures, documentation and time management
- prior study experience, such as completing another certificate, diploma or degree
Students who are newer to study, childcare settings, workplace documentation, online learning or professional English may take closer to 12 months. Some students may require an extension beyond the standard enrolment period.
Sarah – about 6 months
Sarah is 35 and has two children aged 6 and 9. She has many years of child-related experience through parenting, playgroups and regular interaction with early childhood services. She also has 10 years of previous work experience in administration and customer service, giving her a strong foundation in communication, organisation, following procedures, WHS awareness and documentation.
Many course concepts are familiar to Sarah, including routines, hygiene, safety, child development, communication and play-based learning. She studies consistently, organises placement early and completes her 160-hour placement over several weeks. For Sarah, completing in about 6 months is realistic.
Mia – about 12 months
Mia is 20 and has worked in retail since leaving school. She completed Year 12 and did well across all subjects. Mia partially completed a course in fashion and another in graphic design. She has some experience caring for younger siblings, is comfortable around infants and toddlers, but limited experience in formal early childhood services. She is confident with customer service, teamwork, punctuality and following workplace procedures, but needs more time to learn specific regulations and policies required in the early childhood sector. She learns the practical care side of the course very easily and quickly due to her experience with children.
Mia works through the course steadily and prepares carefully before placement. For Mia, completing in about 12 months may be more realistic.
Amina – longer than 12 months
Amina is 31 and has substantial experience caring for children in family and community settings, mainly in her home country. She is capable and motivated, but needs more time with professional English, written assessments, service policies and early childhood documentation. She may understand the practical work but need longer to read policies, complete written responses and prepare workplace evidence.
Amina may need an extension beyond the standard enrolment period due to the additional time required for English language, written assessment and documentation tasks.
